If you are like me, then you are a freelance designer who does all of their work at home. Personally, I love it and would not have it any other way. You get a whole different type of freedom when you are doing your own thing from home versus having to go into an office where you have a cubicle out like everyone else.
Of course, as great as being a freelance designer from home might be, it is not always great. There are some challenges that come with working from home that you do not experience when you are working for a company in an office with lots of other employees.
Staying motivated is one of the things that is really difficult for me on some days. I think it is because there are a lot of things at home that are distracting that you do not have in a regular office. For instance, if you have any video games at home then you might be tempted to play those instead of getting your work done.
That is why it is important to set up a dedicated place for you to do your work. And it is important that you only do work in this space. Otherwise, you will really mess up your productivity since your brain will think that you can play instead of work when you are sitting at the work space.
Another thing that you have to deal with at home versus working out of a regular office building is other family members who might interrupt you. This is especially common with children. If there are young kids in the home, then you really have to try to teach them that when you are in your work space that you are not to be bothered. It can be challenging to get this point across to them when they are young, so it takes a little bit of extra work. Know that if you stop to play with them once, it will create a pattern in their brains and really mess with your work time.
Noise from family members at home can also be a problem. You will have to ask them to keep the television volume down as well as any other noises. You may even discover that you need to replace some loud appliances that are used regularly so that you do not get interrupted by every day activities, this includes things like looking for things like quiet coffee grinders and cleaning equipment.
And most importantly, choose a work space that has a door. This is the single best way to block out all the outside noises and distractions so that you can stay focused and get all of your design work done. Plus, it is an easy way to prevent the kids from coming up to you while you are trying to work on a project.
